Description
This photography book presents a structured study of Olympos, a village in the north of Karpathos, through long-term observation and documentation.
The work focuses on the continuity of a living system. It examines how identity is maintained across generations, both within the village and across its diaspora. The material is grounded in ethnographic context, informed by decades of academic research and local knowledge.
The book follows the structure of everyday life and ritual. It documents religious cycles, communal celebrations, and social practices, alongside the material culture that supports them. Clothing, architecture, music, and gesture are treated as interconnected elements within a unified framework.
A central theme is the condition of Olympos as a “memory place.” Migration, depopulation, and return shape the way traditions are preserved and performed. The work records both continuity and change, without isolating one from the other.
The photographic approach is direct and consistent. Black and white is used to reduce information to structure, allowing emphasis on form, repetition, and relationship across the sequence.
The book includes introductory texts by Vassiliki Chryssanthopoulou and Evmorfa Diakogeorgiou, providing anthropological and cultural context to the work.
