BLACK AND WHITE ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Photographed in Santorini, this black and white image is structured around interference between light and mass.
The composition is dominated by a rising volcanic ridge that occupies most of the frame. Its edge forms a continuous diagonal, creating a clear directional flow. The sun appears partially obstructed behind the ridge, producing a concentrated burst of light.
The environment is minimal and exposed. The terrain is rough and uneven, with no additional elements to interrupt the primary form. The sky remains clear, acting as a neutral backdrop for the ridge and light interaction.
The relationship between elements is defined by obstruction. The solid mass of the ridge blocks the light source, forcing it to emerge through a narrow point. This creates tension between the hidden and the visible, reinforcing the structure of the scene.
Light is direct and intense. The sunburst introduces sharp rays and internal reflections within the lens. The rendering preserves both the density of the dark mass and the precision of the light, without flattening either.
Part of the Chorōs series, a body of work studying rhythm and musical structure within static visual compositions.
