BLACK AND WHITE ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Photographed in Polypotamos, Florina, this black and white image is structured through depth, internal framing, and repetition of figures across space.
The composition unfolds in multiple layers. In the foreground, figures are positioned close to the lens, partially cropped and softly separated from the background. Their presence establishes an immediate visual barrier, creating a sense of proximity and tension.
At the center of the frame, a doorway reveals a second, fully structured composition. Within this inner frame, a seated figure is surrounded by standing figures, echoing the arrangement seen in the previous image. This creates a composition within a composition, extending the visual narrative deeper into the space.
The doorway functions as a natural frame, isolating the inner group while maintaining continuity with the outer scene. This layered structure guides the viewer’s gaze inward, moving from the foreground figures toward the central axis of the inner composition.
Repetition is present both spatially and structurally. The figures in the foreground and those within the doorway mirror each other in attire and posture, creating a visual rhythm that connects the two planes.
Light enters from the right side, illuminating the foreground figures unevenly while allowing the inner scene to remain more controlled and balanced. This contrast between planes enhances depth and separation.
Part of the Caryatis series, a long-term body of work exploring traditional Greek costume through directed portraiture.
