Details: Product Description Born in Antwerp in 1941, Harry Gruyaert was one of the first European photographers to explore the creative potential of colour in the 1970s and 1980s. This book brings together his best work, including images from his renowned 1972 series TV Shots and the later Made in Belgium, in one beautifully produced volume. Influenced by such American photographers as Saul Leiter, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, as well as by cinema, Gruyaerts work defined new territory for colour photography: an emotive, non-narrative and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world. His photographs are autonomous and self-sufficient, often independent from any context or thematic logic. A member of Magnum Photos since 1982, he has embraced the possibilities of digital photography in his most recent work, feeling that it allows him to take more risks and capture new kinds of light. Review A pioneer of colour photography. --Independent François Hébel's stunning book not only showcases Gruyaert's outstanding work, but also the important role he played in establishing colour photography as an art form. --Aesthetica First English-language monograph on [the] Magnum master. --Observer The images gathered together in a new book of his photographs are full of quiet, even banal moments. But they are transformed by Gruyaert's eye, an eye that can find beauty in a raincloud, flaking paint or a string of lightbulbs. --The Herald, Glasgow There are some absolute gems contained within this book... --Amateur Photographer Harry Gruyaert's eponymous new book is a retrospective of his career from the 1970s to the present ... The book documents some of the more interesting places in the world ... only Gruyaert could have made them look this way. --Picture Book of the Week, New Statesman Handsomely produced. --Lens Culture Offer[s] a comprehensive retrospective of his career. --British Journal of Photography A much-needed retrospective. --The Bookseller One impossibly vivid image after another. --Daily Telegraph This lavishly produced book ... --RPS Journal (Royal Photographic Society) About the Author Francois Hebel is the curator of the Harry Gruyaert show at the Maison Europeene de la photographie in April 2015. He has been producer, curator, and author of numerous exhibitions and books.
