BLACK AND WHITE ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Photographed in Paliouri, Evros, this black and white image presents two female figures standing inside a traditional interior, both wearing the traditional costumes of Metaxades.
The first figure stands in the foreground near a window, turned slightly toward the camera. Natural light enters from the left, illuminating her face and upper body while casting the rest of the space into shadow. Behind her, a second figure stands deeper in the room, aligned along the same axis but positioned further back, creating depth within the composition.
The interior is defined by a textured wall surface and a single window that acts as the primary light source. Above the figures, a small framed image is placed on the wall. On the right side of the frame, a Greek flag is draped over a surface, partially illuminated and forming a strong visual element within the darker area of the composition.
The structure of the image is based on depth and contrast. The foreground figure is more prominently lit, while the second figure remains slightly subdued. The window creates a clear division between light and shadow, guiding the eye across the scene. The flag introduces a secondary focal point, balancing the composition on the opposite side.
Part of the Caryatis series, a long-term body of work exploring traditional Greek costume through directed portraiture.
Printed as an archival pigment print on Hahnemühle fine art paper.
